The Uk’s Best Music Festivals
The annual calender of music festivals is perhaps one of the highlights of the British Summer. Every year there are a large number of music festivals that take place, each one catering for different tastes in music. Most of these events attract some of the top acts and musicians from all over the world, and also feature a wide mix of activities for family and friends. We’ve selected some of the best events on UK shores and discussed why you should consider going to one.
The Glastonbury Festival – Famous for world class acts, a huge variety of genres and of course…mud! Glastonbury is set in Somerset in rural England about 2 hours drive from London. Every year the lineup features bands and musicians from all over the world, producing one of the most varied and stellar lineups you could ever see. Not only this, the site is absolutely huge and you can see much more than just music. From poetry to crafts and performing arts Glastonbury has it all. If you’re after a genuine festival and a huge variety of entertainment then Glastonbury is probably for you!
The Big Chill – The Big Chill festival is situated in the Malvern Hills is Herefordshire and the setting is absolutley stunning. It aims to be exactly what it says on the tin and be a nice relaxed festival for everyone. The lineup is weighted more towards the dance genre with lots of Dj’s and chill out acts. However, there is usually also a mixture of bands so there is usually a fairly good variety in the music. Party goers can keep going through to the small hours with plenty of music tents staying open nice and late!
The Isle of Wight Festival – Steeped in history, the Isle of Wight festival has seen some of the most legendary performers over the years, perhaps it’s most famous being Jimi Hendrix in 1970. The festival went on a hiatus after the 1970 show and reconvened in 2002. Since then it’s developed into a fantastic festival featuring acts such as The Kaiser Chiefs, The Stereophonics and Muse.
Reading and Leeds – Boasting probably the best Rock lineup in the world, the Reading and Leeds festivals are a must attend event for anyone into their rock. Being at the end of the summer, the festivals are also very popular with school and college leavers seeing out the summer in style. The twin festivals share a three day lineup meaning that you have the choice of two sites to visit. If you want to go you’ll have to be quick as tickets often sell out within hours of going on sale.
The V Festival – This festival regularly features the most popular pop artists of the time and past acts have included Paolo Nutini, Alanis Morrisette, Sterophonics and Foo Fighters. You’re guaranteed to see some amazing bands so it’s well worth a go if pop music is your thing. The V festival is another twin event with the lineup rotating between two sites on the same weekend, meaning you have two choices of location.
As the list above demonstrates, there is plenty of choice when it comes to UK music festivals. There really is something for everyone. If you’re not sure which one to chose, simply buy some music magazines and check out who’s playing and where.
