The Lesson of Snow White
Children films always had an advantage over films of other genres. They are great for a family to enjoy together. Parents don’t have to worry about any inappropriate language, violence, or overt sex scenes. Even better, children films always comes with a lesson attached. Disney has a long line of great cinemas released over the years that are geared towards minor audiences. These films never fail to disappoint, and always has a moral to be learned in the end.
I could talk about any one of the great classics released by Disney. For this article, I’m going to talk about Snow White, which was released in 1937 and is the first animated movie by Disney. Despite being over 70 years old, Snow White remains one of the greatest animations of all time. It won’t be necessary for me to go over the plot, because that’s not what this article is about. I’m going to be discussing the moral of the tale, so that parents can pass it along to their children.
The main lesson of Snow White is about vanity, and how it can turn anyone into a selfish monster. The evil Queen was such a monster who believed her beauty surpassed all others. To reinforce her own delusion, she would have a magic mirror confirm that she was indeed the fairest of them all.
Then came the day when the mirror changed its answer and said that Snow White was now the fairest. This didn’t sit well with the Queen and she concoct a plan to oust Snow White by taking the form of an old hag, and fooling Snow White into biting into a poison laced apple.
A lesson can be learned here. Physical beauty may pleasing to the eyes, but it is temporary, and will wither away with age and be replaced by wrinkled skin and white hair. Inner beauty, such as that of kindness, compassion, and charity go a much longer way, and is a true reflection of who you are within. The Queen’s obsession with appearances would be her downfall.
For Snow White, she falls into deep slumber after consuming the poisoned apple. This could be another lesson for children. NEVER accept anything from someone you don’t know.
I believe it would be a good idea for parents to arrange a family movie night at least once a week. Let your kids enjoy the movie, and when it’s over, talk with them about the lessons I just went over. Learning and entertainment goes well together, especially for young children.
If you liked the Snow White Disney movie, then you may also enjoy other Disney classics. Give the link a click to see where you can get these movies for DVD and Blue Ray.
