Star Wars Clone Wars Deluxe At At Imperial Walker
The Star Wars Clone Wars AT-AT Imperial Walker, is a four-legged combat vehicle used by the Empire’s ground forces. Standing about 15 meters tall, these walkers are very intimidating, and are used as much for psychological warfare as they are for combat. Imperial walkers have played a crucial role in the outcome of many battles. Built at the Kuat Drive Yards, the same manufacturing facility that created the Empire’s Imperial Star Destroyer, the AT-AT walker is the perfect embodiment of Imperial philosophy. It favors fear over function, as the huge vehicle is more a weapon of terror than a efficient combat machine. Although its complex legs do require much maintenance, the well built walker does live up to its all terrain name, able to plod through the most intimidating obstacles. ILM is responsible for their animation and design, often using models, stop-motion animation, and relevant matte paintings to depict their presence in the films.
About the At At
Joe Johnston’s first design for the Empire’s war machines was a giant, wheeled vehicle. But for The Empire Strikes Back, the final design was a four-legged walker. Industrial Light & Magic created models ranging from 6 to 50 centimeters tall. ILM filmed the Imperial Walkers using stop-motion animation against matte paintings created by Mike Pangrazio. ILM studied elephants to figure out the best way to animate the four-legged AT-ATs. Although the stop-motion animation style gave the AT-ATs an unorthodox look on film, ILM found this acceptable because the Imperial Walker is after all, a mechanical beast. The sound of the AT-AT walking was created by Sound Designer Ben Burtt, by using the sound of an sheet metal stamper.
AT-ATs may look like camels, but they are actually advanced war machines, carrying “extremely heavy armor. Their armor is resistant to most standard weapons, however, the back of the neck column has a weak spot and, if shot, can cause the Imperial Walker to be destroyed. The AT-AT is the primary assault vehicle during the Battle of Hoth, . In the film, the AT-ATs destroy the shield generator protecting the Rebel hideout, taking out soldiers, vehicles. and installations in the process. One AT AT is destroyed when a Snowspeeder wraps a tow cable around the legs, causing its collapse. The Walker also makes an appearance in Ep. VI, on Endor. There are many different walkers: Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back introduces the All Terrain Armored Transport (AT-AT) and All Terrain Scout Transport (AT-ST), while Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and the Star Wars Expanded Universe feature numerous others. Star Wars AT AT Imperial Walker Toys and Collectibles have been merchandised and featured ever since the movies debuted.
