Review about the mini series Band of Brothers
The mini series Band of Brothers is deemed undoubtedly one of the finest war movies ever created. Influenced by the book by Stephen Ambrose, the ten parts follow the history among the men of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Regiment of the American 101st Airborne. Episode one gets under way with their basic training at Toccoa, Georgia just before being transferred to the United Kingdom as they make ready for their role in the D-Day Assault at Normandy.
Each episode starts off by interviewing veterans of Easy. The veterans remember their war time feelings the episode covers but at this point, the men aren’t identified. While the old soldiers aren’t identified, the episodes familiarizes you with the people from the start and the actors are well chosen making it simple to bond with them from the beginning.
Whilst the action scenes are filmed superbly, the reason Band of Brothers stand above a number of different war movies is the fact it reveals the personal tales so clearly. For instance, in episode two simply prior to Easy are set to drop into Normandy, one of the soldiers, Bill Guarnere, learns his brother has been killed at Montecassino.
The ten episodes show the stories of Easy Company beginning with their basic training prior to heading into action in Northern France and to the village of Carentan. Episode four sees the roll-out of replacement men into Easy Company and highlights the issues they have being accepted by the D-Day veterans as Easy are involved in Operation Market Garden.
The subsequent two episodes cover the build up and then the action at Bastogne throughout the Battle of the Bulge. By this stage a number of Easy Company are at breaking point and this is the subject matter of episode 7. While the war nears the finish, there is a final patrol for Easy Company. The horrors of war are highlighted as the men locate a concentration camp. The last episode sees Easy Company relocate to Austria where they capture the Eagle’s Nest high in the mountains at Berchtesgaden.
The series closes with interviews with the men of Easy Company and finally identifies the men that audiences have come to know throughout the ten episodes of Band of Brothers.
This TV series offers a fascinating point of view into the actions of Easy Company at some of the most famous battles of World War Two including Normandy, Arnhem, Battle of the Bulge right through to the end of the war in Europe..
