Part Played By The Past Few Decades In Shaping The Contemporary Indian Movie Industry
The era often associated with modern Indian cinema is said to have begun in 1970′s when commercial cinema came forth as a means of recreation for the masses and this continues with the new Indian cinema today. Although some directors such as Govind Nihilani and Shyam Benegal continued to make artistic movies, the total number of commercial movies produced were much more than the artistic ones.
The influence of commercial cinema kept on growing in 1980s and 1990s. With the release of movies like Kayamat se Kayamat Tak, Chandni, Tezaab and Maine Pyaar Kiya in 1980′s and Baazigar, DDLG and Darr in 1990′s, the trend of romantic cinema held ground. These mushy movies were mostly love stories of young couples with a happy ending. Some of these movies were huge blockbusters and broke box office records.
The trend of romantic movies continued in late 1990′s and early 2000′s with the release of hugely popular movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. However, late 1990′s also witnessed resurgence of parallel cinema with movies like Satya, Chandni Bar and Traffic Signal getting a lot of critical acclaim. These modern Indian movies were a refreshing change at the time when uninspired romantics were the order of the day and they proved to be unforgettable experience for the audience.
Many movies with large budgets including Veer and Mein aur Mrs Khanna were not well received, and surprisingly, DevD and other small budget movies have done well. This has opened doors for new concepts among the Bollywood producers and directors.
The recent trend in Hindi movie industry is to come up with unique storylines and ideas. Newer movies like My Name is Khan and 3 Idiots had original narratives and have been huge successes at the box office. The new Indian movies are ushering a novel approach to movie making which is finding favor with the huge number of viewers of Bollywood movies.
