On DJ Setup
Historically, a DJ setup has consisted of two turntables, a mixer and some speakers. But today, thanks to new technological innovations, DJs can choose from a selection of different means of playing their music. You can make use of a turntable, CD turntable, computer software or any combination within. The following are further discussed below.
Record Changer – Turntables are often mistaken for phonographs. What makes a DJ turntable unique from a regular turntable is the many features it has. The most important of these is the ability to increase or decrease the speed that the record is moving. This lets you match the tempo of two songs so that you can blend them together.
CD Phonograph – These are CD players that play regular CDs. It only differs with an added feature of changing the tempo of a song. Many DJs today prefer this type of turntable because it allows them to use CDs rather than vinyl.
DJ Software – In mixing music, turntables are slowly being replaced by computer software. This has just been introduced which explains why some older DJs are susceptive to change. However, many of the famous DJs are now solely performing with software such as Ableton Live.
Audio Mixer – A mixer comes with two or more audio channels to connect any other equipment you use. This allows you to control the volume of each song. Another feature is the fader which is helpful with song transition. Furthermore, it has a Mixer’s EQ to allow more control. Also known as a Mixer’s Equalizer, it allows you to manipulate a song’s treble, mids or bass. All these features can make a very smooth mix sound.
Headset – This is a mandatory for every DJ. Those old walkman headphones are not going to cut it – the professional models pack increased volume and the sound separation you will need to follow a mix. DJs use the headphones for playback of their mix before sending it for the crowd to hear.
Cartridges – If you are using turntables, you will need these. They are what translate the vinyl into sound. Your needles must be new and in perfect condition to avoid damaging your records and creating a horrible sound.
Digital DJing – This modern type of DJing has rapidly spread like wildfire. Most DJs are caught using this digital DJing tool. This is because the digital DJing devices hook your computer up to whatever type of turntable you are using.
