New York City Walking Tours Provide A Close-Up View Of The City’s Sights
Even though New York City covers a little more than 300 square acres, the best way to see the sights just may be on foot. New York City walking tours are a popular way to see the city, whether on public tours, privately booked ones or self-guided through books. New York’s diversity is apparent through the various cultural, architectural and food tours. There are also shopping tours, ghost tours and tours of Wall Street.
A variety of Wall Street walks are offered, both private and public, which run about 1 1/2 to 2 hours in length. Some provide a detailed history of the Stock Market including its history of crashes, scares and scandals. Others offer a more modern approach of how Wall Street runs today.
The list of cultural and architectural tours is long. Some aim more at museums and art displays such as a tour of Rockefeller Center, one of the Theater District or another of the art on display in Midtown. For a cultural flare here are tours of Little Italy, and the Lower Eastside Jewish Heritage or Lower Eastside Irish Heritage. And architecturally-speaking there are tours specializing in the gargoyles of Manhattan, one of the Roosevelt Bridge or others of certain neighborhoods such as the Gramercy Park Historical District or the West Village. And, then there is a taste of the rich and famous on a millionaires tour. Tours within these categories are usually a bit longer, from two to three hours.
If food is of interest, there are many food tours which combine some cultural aspects along with dining or sampling of foods. A visit to Chinatown includes a sit down meal. A leisurely stroll through Chelsea Market lets you sample some of the shop’s specialties including seafood, native European foods and bakeries.
Every city has its ghosts and New York is no exception. A ghost tour may take you through some of New York’s most well-known haunts and will be sure to share tales of ghost sightings, apparitions, folklore and other super natural phenomena. Greenwich Village and Manhattan are just some of the areas which may offer these haunting experiences.
Perhaps the walking tours most in demand are those of the World Trade Center and Ground Zero. These tours not only reveal where 9/11 happened, but share the stories of the people; the victims and the heroes. Walking tours here also include nearby landmarks such as St. Paul’s Chapel and the American Express Eleven Tears Memorial.
The Big Apple has a lot so show and there is a lot to see. New York City walking tours offer a more intimate look at some of the sights. Most tours are easy for all ages to attend. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
