My DVD Acquisition Narrative
A couple of weeks ago I was having a nice relaxing lunch with a couple of old buddies. We all decided to go to the famous restaurant downtown that is popular with movie stars and astronauts. You can listen to guitar music while you eat your vegetables. And they way you order your food is pretty cool. You can either go old school, and order straight from the menu, or you can have the chef cook up whatever he thinks is best for you.
Then some guy came over the loudspeaker and said they were going to be giving away several prizes and gifts. We weren’t aware of it, but this was the restaurant’s one year anniversary. They were going to give away gifts to thank the customers for their ultimate loyalty to the restaurant. They were going to draw the numbers by lottery, and then give the prizes to the customers. My heart was being a mile a minute.
And with a big clap of artificial thunder, they revealed the magical prizes. And the biggest prize was a fantastic looking portable DVD player. In recent times, these technological marvels have become exceedingly popular, and for some very good reasons. One of the most popular uses is to use them on long car trips. The kids can watch DVDs in the back seat, and not bother mom and dad who are up front arguing over where to stop for lunch, or why the gas tank is suddenly empty.
And not only families can benefit from these fantastic things. They are for anybody who wants to pass the time while in an otherwise boring situation. My friend told me about his story. At his college, you could rent many educational DVDs for a very small fee from the campus library. And when he attended lectures from his more boring instructors, he would watch the interesting ones on his DVD.
Another fantastic example is when you get called for jury duty. Instead of sitting there for six hours reading the newspaper or trying to stay awake, you could easily watch a couple of DVDs while waiting to see if your name was going to be called. If you’ve ever been to jury duty, then you know how incredibly boring it can be.
Naturally I hoped that I would win the portable DVD player, since I didn’t have one, and both my friends did. And much to my surprise, I did win it, and went home a very happy man. I will always make it a point, from now on, to eat at that restaurant at least once a week. They now have a loyal customer for life.
