Movie Review Of Despicable Me
Despicable Me is a new 3-D cartoon movie that relates the rather original tale of a villain who starts off being, well, evil and tells of how relationships and familial love can make a difference in the lives of even the worst of people. This is a rather light-hearted comedy style story of a super villain named Gru and his progression as a person. It starts off with this villain hearing that the Giza Pyramids have gone missing. He knows that this must be the work of one of his colleagues and decides to go one step farther and steal the moon. When the Bank of Evil refuses to give him a loan however, he is forced to jump through hoops and go to extremes in order to see his plan through. To complicate things even further though, he has adopted three orphan girls who he is beginning to care about very deeply.
-The Good And The Bad
There are a lot of positives when it comes to this movie, and the plot is definitely one of worth discussing. The writers were actually very clever in putting together this plot device. The villain is not a particularly good person at the start of all of this, but he was humanized quite well because of the fact that he was placed in situations that most can relate to. Being bested by a younger colleague, trying to get a loan, seeking the approval of parents, and attempting to accomplish things with children running about the place.
Even though Gru isn’t a villain so much as an anti-hero (or maybe unsympathetic hero?) and his life revolves around evil, his attempts to reach his goals are things that people know only too well. The movie does a great job in showing how people and healthy relationships can change a person for the good.
-Character Development
First and foremost this is a cartoon so a viewer really can’t go into this expecting depth and insight into the human condition. However the simplistic nature of the characters does make it obvious to see the character changing. Gru goes from an evil villain bent on ruining life for other into a devoted and happy father to his adopted daughters. People are able to see the relationship between him and his mother grow stronger and the girls and how they spark change is also fun to watch.
It is also worth noting that Vector and Perkins although lacking in the way of character development, have that devoted father-son type of relationship which is interesting to look at when contrasted with that of Gru and his mother.
As far as movies go, you won’t find anything especially deep or profound in this film. However if you are looking for an enjoyable way to spend your evening whether with your children or just for some light-hearted fun, Despicable Me is a great family film to go and see. It is easy to relate to and will make you laugh while it promotes the importance of receiving love and acceptance from the people you care about the most. The plot is interesting and the acting is great. This has been a very popular movie for a reason. Go ahead and see it for yourself.
