Mixtapes or mixed tapes are song collections that've been recorded in a certain order and which also historically mean the songs will be recorded onto compact sized audio cassette tapes.

A mixed tape is usually made with a view to reflecting the musical tastes of the individual compiling the tape and it can include anything from favourite songs put together to a rather more conceptualized mix of varied songs that reflect a certain theme or maybe even a mood. Mixtapes, according to Geoffrey Obrien, who is an essayist, are a widely practiced American art form.

When such a tape is correctly mixed together it can make a musical experience that's bigger than the total of all its individual tunes.

Nevertheless this time too passed by as digital audio which was cheaper offered a rather more exciting mixture of music that was stored on compact discs as well as in MP3 formats. Even notwithstanding these later inventions, the term mixed tape continues to refer to audio cassettes.
