Jamiroquai “Rock Dust Light Star” – Funk’s back!
Jamiroquai were formed in 1992. Initially they were the most important component in the 90s London-based acid jazz movement, next to groups like Incognito, the James Taylor Quartet, the Brand New Heavies, Galliano, and Corduroy. Subsequent albums have explored other musical directions such as pop, rock and electronica. Frontman is singer Jay Kay, he formed the band and is the only permanent member. Jamiroquai have sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.
Jamiroquai had four No.1 albums in the UK, the first was “Emergency on Planet Earth” (1993). “The Return of the Space Cowboy” (1994) hit No.2, as did their American breakthrough “Travelling Without Moving” (1996). “Virtual Insanity” became their biggest UK hit yet (reaching No.3), and featured a video that brought international acclaim – at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards it received ten nominations, winning four awards. “Cosmic Girl” and “Alright” were also hits.
In 1998, Jamiroquai had their first and only UK No.1, “Deeper Underground”. Their 4th album “Synkronized” (1999) topped the UK charts and featured two more hit singles. “A Funk Odyssey” (2001) also topped the album chart; their latest hit is “Feels Just Like it Should”, from 2005′s Dynamite.
On 1 October 2010, Jamiroquai appeared on “Later…with Jools Holland”. “Rock Dust Light Star” was the first performance of the show, and was well received. They also performed “Deeper Underground” and “Blue Skies”. Fans and critics praised them for bringing back the funky sound they stood for. The album has been written by band members entirely and showcases a different side to Jay Kay’s voice and singing, he is following the trend from rapping to more singing.
“Rock Dust Light Star” is groovy and tight, which the past three albums weren’t so much, it’s more consistent and it tops expectations of fans and critics. What’s missing is the proclaimed “new direction” the band intended to take, although I ‘m not missing anything. Jamiroquai will tour the UK and Europe in March and April 2011.
