Does no one realize that Charlie Sheen needs help, perhaps even of a medical nature? The man is acting deranged. He has made public declarations of drug use on national news outlets. He babbles in an inane stream of consciousness. He refuses to admit that he may have a mental disorder and he looks like he has not slept in days. Any one of these strange behaviors should indicate that the man needs help, but instead the whole world has pinpointed him as our new capering clown. Our only response is to walk around in funny Charlie Sheen t-shirts and laugh.

We have a tendency to forget that celebrities are just human beings too. They succumb to the same weaknesses that plague any other person. They become addicted to drugs just like any other junkie and they can suffer from mental ailments just as easily as anyone else. Perhaps even more easily, come to think of it. When someone like Charlie Sheen accumulates so much attention and so much wealth, they can experience a very real breaking point. Imagine being so watched, that every small move you make is recorded and scrutinized. Charlie Sheen most likely feels like he’s at the height of his popularity. He thinks people love him for being himself. The Internet has been particularly cruel, and I am unsure if Sheen is even aware of it. Satire is a hard thing to see when you are the subject matter, it would seem.

He unfurled his wings and leapt from beneath the shadow of his father’s impressive acting career and made films that had both critical and commercial success. One of these films will be considered one of the greatest of all times, and that is the film known as “Platoon”. He had great promise, but decided to follow the course of parties and drugs instead of the course of professionalism.

Charlie Sheen is no longer the man he once was, nor will he likely ever get to be that man again. There are hoards of new “fans” out there wearing their funny Charlie Sheen t-shirts and waiting for him to say the next funny tagline. This will never lead to his recovery. He will feed the fires of this new kind of fame until he burns out and wafts away on the breeze like a piece of ash. The best thing that we can do for Charlie Sheen is to just leave him be and let him recover.
