Here’s a little piece about a little episode in Disney’s tremendous filmography. This is an article about one of the lost gems of the Wonderful World of Disney which used to air every Sunday night on ABC. Every Sunday, you could expect a family-friendly flick from your good friends at the Mouse. One of the better flicks was Little Dog Lost.

The title reads like some kind of kid’s book — that’s because it was based on “Hurry Home Candy” by DeJong. Not surprisingly, the plot follows the book pretty closely, so don’t expect an intricate, interlocking plot. This is Sunday night fair, mind you. Essentially, what happens is a dog loves his family, runs away, gets lost, has adventures in the wild, then comes home.

Ok, so if it’s so predictable, why bother? Good question. Did I mention this was released in 1963? Does that matter? What makes Little Dog Lost so appealing is the Welsh Corgi playing the titular dog. How can anyone not enjoy watching a Corgi get into adventures? It’s not possible — even dog-haters should enjoy this predictable film.

If you’re a fan of DeJong — or your kids are — then this film is a must. Why subject your kids to animated film after animated film when you can give them real-life actors playing make-believe? I know this may sound like I’m splitting hairs, but I find the Wonderful World of Disney titles to be better produced and acted than their blockbusters.

This film is bound to end up first on the shelves of Baby Boomers, then Gen Xers and beyond. It makes sense given that these titles were the weekend bread-and-butter films of their youth. Still, that being said, they are great films that won’t embarrass you or scare the hell out of your kids.
