Comparison Of Android Tablet Vs. IPad
Well, Apple lovers don’t really need a reason to not choose an Android tablet. But let’s just assume for a moment that those involved are not Apple fanatics wedded to the iPad. Here’s a few reasons for objective and rational consumers to prefer an Android tablet over the iPad or other tablets.
For one, consider that Apple supplies all the hardware and the OS required for the iPad. Consumers have no choice about the manufacturer, cost, size, features, service, support, etc. Apple even dictates how the device can be used and maintains complete control over what’s inside, leaving consumers with no options except to follow the company’s rules.
Take the size, for example. The only size the iPad comes in is 9.56″, while the tablets from other companies vary from 5 to 10+ inches. Another thing are features like cameras, which have been available on other tablets for some time now while it came to the iPad only in the new iPad 2.
Open Source: Apple’s iOS is not open source and developers have to work with whatever changes Apple decides to incorporate. The Android OS, on the other hand, is an open source project based on Linux. There’s an army of developers working hard to add features and make it better, on top of the fact that any manufacturer can choose to use it which reduces the net cost for consumers.
Processing Power: Another thing which Apple has kept a tight lid on is the processing power. They could use more powerful processors capable of multi-tasking, but that would need changes to the rest of the device to support the advanced computing needs. For instance, the battery would drain faster and its life would be reduced.
In short, Apple would be forced to re-design the entire device. They’re resisting it so far but other manufacturers have already incorporated the necessary changes. There are tablets out there now that are much more powerful and capable of taking on tasks that the iPad cannot handle.
Replacements: Also to be noted that putting out a closed device like the iPad in a single mold without any screws makes it a bit hard to provide service and support. If the battery dies, Apple has to replace the entire device instead of changing the part. But Android tablet manufacturers don’t have any such problems and they can provide replacement parts to service agencies.
iTunes: iPad users are forced to sync with iTunes for transferring downloads purchased from another device to the iPad. The Android marketplace has no such tangled procedure required. Users can buy apps on any device and send it straight to the tablets without any syncing required.
The sum of it is that consumers need to think about the choices. The iPad offers a cool and hip device with no freedom or options except what Apple allows. The Android tablet is likely to be closer to what the consumer really wants, since there is so much choice from many different manufacturers.
