Acoustic Guitar Lessons for Fingerstyle and Flatpicking Guitar
The free acoustic guitar lessons you find here will be an amazing resource for you to discover to play acoustic guitar from scratch, or to ‘bone-up’ on some things you should know, to become an even better guitarist.
I was a music instructor for the guitar for over 15 years and have been playing acoustic guitar for over 40 years.
We will have a loads of acoustic guitar materials that we will be covering on this site. Fingerstyle Guitar and Flatpicking Guitar will be the two picking styles that we will be looking at here.
Flatpicking Guitar Lessons:
We will be covering flatpicking style guitar in detail. Be aware that this style is also known as Bluegrass Guitar or plectrum guitar picking. We will look at such items as correct hand positioning, how to posture and use the pick and getting the most efficiency out of your practicing.
Also the left hand will be covered from how to grasp the neck, place the fingers, and actually play the notes. These basic methods may seem unneeded, but if you don’t start out right with the basics, you playing abilities will suffer a great deal.
Approach is everything and it separates the really impressive players from the average players.
Tablature or TAB will be discussed in depth as well. Tablature is a musicians ‘shorthand’, and was developed for musicians who either didn’t know how to read music , or care to know how. Ornamental effects will be covered as well. These are typically known as hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, bends and harmonics for your learning pleasure. These ornamental strategies are often considered intermediate or even advanced level of guitar playing, but it is important that you master them.
Lastly, we will break apart a few of the best breaks from such outstanding flatpicking artist’s as Tony Rice, Doc Watson, Norman Blake and many others. Use these secrets, and you will experience your playing skills will progress at an amazing pace.
Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar Lessons or Fingerpicking Guitar:
Fingerstyle guitar gets it’s roots from ragtime music, where the guitarists of the time attempted to duplicate the ragtime piano pieces.
Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Merle Travis and countless other fabulous fingerstyle guitar artist’s took this style and put their own unique spin on it.
Although it is a very challenging style of guitar playing, it does give a impressive amount of satisfaction to the guitarist and the listener alike.
I would recommend that you first master flatpicking guitar prior to attempting to play fingerstyle guitar. This will make your passage to fingerstyle guitar much easier.
By learning flatpicking first, you will gradually go through basic guitar methods such as left hand strategies, speed training, the mastery of ornamental techniques and more. Not to mention that you should get very familiar with scales, positions and the guitar fretboard.
To benefit the most from these lessons, you will start out with basic exercises to gain from control and self-confidence and then we will gradually get you deeper into the process.
We will concentrate on the right hand techniques, as that is the greatest departure from flatpicking style guitar.
Also left hand differences will be covered with regards to chord forms and more. Then we will take some actual songs and study them, pull them apart to study how they are played and give detailed lesson information which you can then go on to articulate your own style.
Sample breaks will be studied through a number of of the most celebrated fingerstyle guitarists such as, Merle Travis, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed and more. Let’s benefit from the understanding of the fingerstyle masters. Then you can take this knowledge and through tweaking it a bit, you cancreate your own distinctive style.
If you could faithfully play one of Chet Atkins riffs, you would sound very very amazing. But, if you make it uniquely your own arrangement, based on one of the masters licks – that’s even better! Our lessons will cover how you can do that.
