7 Best Songwriting Tips
Are you a newbie songwriter? Do you want to advance at it?
Here are a few points.
Tip #1: Read, Read, Read, Write, Write, Write! Writing song lyrics is a procedure of creating combination of words that express your idea. The more you read, the more instances of word combination you will have to make from. Read everything–fiction, nonfiction, poetry, biographies, newspapers, magazines. You have no idea where you will find your next great idea.
Tip #2: Learn, Learn, Learn! If you don’t already know music theory, take a training and learn it. You can’t write a total song without it, unless you’re willing to work with a composer. The more information and skill you have, the more control you will have over your finished product.
Tip #3: Know Yourself Why do you create songs? Just for fun, or do you like to make a career of it? It has been said that the only cause to try to make a living writing songs is because you can’t NOT write songs. If songwriting is as crucial to your life as breathing, you’ve got a good start.
Tip #4: See Collaborators Most songwriters are either good lyricists and not-so-good tune-smiths, or vice-versa. To become good at creating both music and lyrics is a rare gift. Most songs are collaborative, team efforts. It is essential to realistically assess your own strengths and weaknesses and learn how to inquire for and accept help when you need it.
Tip #5: Protect Yourself Legally When you start working with a collaborator or try to get a song released or recorded as a demo, it’s time to consult an intellectual property lawyer.
Tip #6: Be Persistent If your first, or second, or fifteenth, song doesn’t get recorded or published, keep on trying. Seek evaluation from family, friends, and experienced musicians and don’t take their comments personally. Use helpful criticism to strengthen your work, and maybe your twentieth song will be the one that rests through.
Tip #7: Have Fun! Not everyone can get paid to PLAY, but musicians do! Enjoy the journey, do what you love, work hard; and in the future you’ll find yourself over the rainbow, where “the dreams that you aren’t afraid to dream really do come true.
